Luna Afra Evans, a strong personality who is not afraid to take on responsibility, is politically active and is committed to thegood life for all…„. These qualities are particularly reflected in her commitmentat only 20 years old, Luna is already a permanent member of the youth association of Bündnis 90/Die Grünen in Berlin and fights alongside numerous other young people for, among other things, a radical ecological, inclusive and queer-feminist […]“ world.

Raised in the Hessian town of Bad Vilbel, Luna moved to Berlin in the fall of 2021. The main reason is her studies of philosophy and political science at the FU Berlin. This combines her passion for reading and a preference for complex issues. In her free time, she likes to meet friends or go to the cinema. In addition, she is also part of a theatre group. At the end of 2020, she decided to join the Green Party’s youth association – a time when personal interactions were severely limited by the global pandemic. All the more Luna was happy to finally become active after her move to the capital, and after only one month in the party, she let herself be elected as state chairwoman. Even though she struggled for a long time with whether she should take this step, she decided to realize her goals – despite the dislike within her circle of acquaintances. But what she calls reckless in retrospect ultimately paid off – today she is the association’s gender policy spokesperson.

„For me, it’s about achieving something together and changing something in society…“. This was and is one of the main motivations for Luna to become politically active. She puts her personal gains in the background in this regard, which underlines her humble nature. The „good life for all“ is also her motivation to get politically involved. The mixture of „community spirit, friendliness and solidarity“ is what keeps her particularly interested in the Green Youth, in addition to the political content. For Luna, however, it is also important to mention that the „Young Greens“ is an association that takes a critical view of the party and does not „support everything,“ according to the 20-year-old. „I’m often confronted lately with the fact that I live in my own bubble – and yes of course, but on the other hand it’s also nice to move around in my own bubble, where I don’t have to justify my existence.“ As a person who has lived through experiences of both sexism and racism, the 20-year-old values politics as a social space that unites people with similar ideas and values and where one can have constructive debates. Accordingly, she is also committed to creating more space for people of different origins who lead less privileged lives and to motivate students and trainees to become politically active. Within society, Luna is particularly bothered by power structures and (political) hierarchies.

„If I had an utopia, then there wouldn’t be so many hierarchies in it. There would be clear distributions of tasks, and that’s a good thing, because if you don’t have responsibility for anything, then things often go nowhere because no one feels like being addressed„, says the 20-year-old student. In her opinion, German democracy has a lot of potential but unfortunately does not live up to it. A large problem of our society sees Luna in capitalism and above all in the powerful behavior of humans. In her opinion, every opinion should be worth and be heard the same, because there are hardly any people who are simply not interested in anything. Everyone has an opinion, a desire or an idea to positively change and improve their lives and the lives of others. That’s why she thinks it’s a shame that „this disaffection with politics doesn’t give people any space at all.“

Another topic that is close to the philosophy student’s heart is the reduction of working hours. „It is often portrayed that people are happy to work 40 hours a week, for example. But in reality, even though most people work 40+ hours a week, they can’t afford a „good“ life and have to work on the side in addition to their main job to make it through the month“ says Luna. A big counter-argument Luna often hears when she speaks up for shorter hours is that people will get lazy if they don’t. But as her favourite philosopher Karl Marx described it early on, people have a need to work in order to, among other things, add value to society and feel useful. Nowadays, work is defined in different ways. That’s why Luna finds it useful to distinguish work from wage labour.  „Many people mean by work only their job and the rest is part of life, therefore the work-life balance.“ But for Luna, work is much more than that. Taking care of friends, having a small garden, running the household, all that is also work. However, it is no longer valued or seen as a natural part of life. In her opinion, everyone should have the right to shape their lives in the way that makes them happy. And that includes time. Time to do something with friends, to go for a walk, simply to have time for yourself and the people you love. This opportunity is offered to very few people. „But I have to say, I’m just saying it like it is the easiest thing to do but in reality, it is easier said than done. But I have a lot to do myself and I throw myself into work and then have to be stopped by my partner, for example,“ the native of Hesse admits and laughs at herself.

However, Luna does not yet know where her path will lead her. Because of her early political activity, it is often assumed that her goal is „big“ politics. That she uses the green youth as a „start into the political position“. Luna is not completely rejected by being a politician, because she says she would find it beautiful to be active as a representative of people who does not come from rich backgrounds, who have not lived in a single-family house and whose parents have not studied, because Luna is also one of them.

In the end, all the paths are open for Luna, because, besides her likeable nature, she is also a very dedicated and determined person, who will fulfil her goals as time goes by. But not to be forgotten, first and foremost is Luna’s passion, which she never wants to lose in all the different projects she will do in the future.
